Corneal Transplantation

When the cornea no longer provides good vision because of swelling, scarring, or irregularity, corneal transplantation may be necessary. This procedure involves removing approximately two-thirds of the patient's cornea and replacing it with a donor cornea. The corneal transplant surgery may be combined with cataract removal or other surgery as needed. The surgery is often successful but it typically takes 12 months or longer to achieve good vision after a corneal transplant.
